Liposuction

One of the safest, most popular ways to eliminate stubborn areas of fat is through liposuction. At his Long Island and Manhattan centers, Dr. Arnold Breitbart performs liposuction alone, or with other body contouring surgeries such as tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Dr. Breitbart offers SmartLipo Triplex™, the latest advance in liposuction. This procedure uses a laser to liquefy the fat, which is then removed with liposuction. The laser also helps to stimulate the tissues and tighten the skin.

SmartLipo Expert

As one of the most experienced SmartLipo surgeons in the New York area, Dr. Breitbart uses the latest generation SmartLipo Triplex™ system, to give you the very best that SmartLipo Triplex™ has to offer. This technology allows Dr. Breitbart's patients to recover faster and experience considerably less bruising and swelling than with traditional liposuction. SmartLipo Triplex™ patients are typically back to work within as little as one or two days following the procedure. SmartLipo liposuction can be performed on various parts of the body, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, back, upper arms, chin, neck, and breasts.

Best Candidates for Liposuction

When dieting and exercise fail to yield desired results, liposuction can help people eliminate unwanted fatty tissue from specific problem areas. Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals who have good skin elasticity and are near their normal weight. People in good general health who want to tone and sculpt localized pockets of fat on the body generally achieve excellent results with liposuction. At our Long Island and Manhattan offices, Dr. Arnold Breitbart can determine which body contouring technique is best to help each patient achieve his or her aesthetic goals.

Info on Liposuction Procedure

During the body contouring procedure, Dr. Arnold Breitbart will create a tiny incision near the problem area. He will then insert a cannula or small vacuum-like tube through the incision, which will be used to break up the fat cells and suction them out. Dr. Breitbart uses SmartLipo Triplex™, which uses a laser to help liquefy the fat and tighten the skin. Following liposuction, the patient will wear an elastic garment for a few weeks to help reduce swelling and expedite the healing process.

During a consultation with Dr. Arnold Breitbart, you will learn what results you can expect after liposuction. Typically, patients are able to return to work within a few days after surgery and any side effects should be minimal.

Liposuction Cost

Liposuction is a customizable plastic surgery, and each patient’s needs are unique. Therefore, someone interested in liposuction for the upper arms, for example, may have a different price estimate than someone looking to reduce stubborn fat in the abdomen and thighs. Dr. Breitbart will evaluate your troublesome areas and discuss your cosmetic goals during your consultation and provide a detailed price estimate.

The cost of liposuction and other plastic surgeries includes pre-operative and post-operative care, including follow-up appointments. Should you need financing, our Long Island and Manhattan offices can help you with financing options through CareCredit, Alphaeon Credit and other healthcare financing companies that help patients realize their aesthetic goals through payment plans.

Liposuction FAQ

Liposuction FAQs

Do I have to wear a special garment after liposuction?

You will wear a special compression garment for a few weeks after the surgery. This helps to reduce swelling and expedite the final appearance.

Is there much swelling or bruising after the surgery?

Most patients have some swelling and may have some bruising. The SmartLipo Triplex™ procedure causes significantly less swelling and bruising than traditional liposuction. Dr. Breitbart also provides you with a special homeopathic medicine to help reduce swelling and bruising. Bruising, if present, is usually gone within 1-2 weeks. Most swelling subsides within 4-6 weeks. Immediately after the procedure, you will notice a significant improvement in the appearance of the areas treated, and this improvement will be even more obvious as the swelling subsides over the next few weeks.

Are there visible scars?

Dr. Breitbart performs the liposuction through tiny incisions usually placed within natural skin creases. As healing occurs, the scars are usually hardly visible or not visible at all.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Liposuction is usually performed under local anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation given by a board certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Breitbart can perform liposuction in his office surgery center, which is certified by the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).

What is the recovery time after liposuction?

Most patients are back to work and their usual activities in just a few days. Exercise and more strenuous activities can usually be resumed in 1-2 weeks.

How does abdominal liposuction differ from a tummy tuck?

Abdominal liposuction and tummy tuck can both improve the appearance of the abdomen. Liposuction removes excess fat from the abdomen to create attractive contours. Tummy tuck is more extensive, as it removes excess fat and skin and tightens separated or loose abdominal muscles.

Dr. Breitbart offers both procedures and can recommend the procedure that is best suited to your unique needs during a one-on-one consultation.

Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is generally not recommended for individuals who are significantly overweight or who have loose, sagging skin. Candidates who smoke will be asked to reduce or quit prior to surgery, as smoking can increase the risk of complications during and after surgery.

How should I prepare for liposuction?

Dr. Breitbart encourages you to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep in the days and weeks leading up to surgery. You should temporarily stop taking medications, vitamins or supplements that can thin your blood, including aspirin, prior to surgery.

Also, you should make arrangements for a family member or friend to drive you to and from your procedure, and in some cases stay with you for at least the first night after surgery.

Dr. Breitbart and his team will provide you with additional instructions as you anticipate the day of your surgery.

Can liposuction improve the appearance of cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by a combination of structural factors, including connective tissue bands, fat pockets and thinning skin. Dr. Breitbart primarily uses SmartLipo laser liposuction, which offers more effective liposuction, skin tightening and improvement of cellulite than traditional liposuction.

For patients with cellulite alone, Dr. Breitbart also offers Cellulaze. This laser treatment simultaneously addresses the connective tissue bands, fat and skin problems that contribute to cellulite, smoothing out the dimpled, puckered areas.

Can liposuction be performed on the face?

Yes, liposuction can be used to reduce unwanted fat under the chin and on the neck, in order to treat that “double chin.”

With his advanced training and skillset, Dr. Breitbart can adeptly remove excess fat to create slimmer, more elegant contours.

Can liposuction be performed on the breasts?

Yes. Liposuction can be used to remove fat tissue (but not glandular tissue) from the breasts and bra roll areas. Dr. Breitbart also uses liposuction to treat gynecomastia in some men whose breasts are out of proportion with the rest of their bodies due to excess fatty tissue.

Are liposuction results considered permanent?

Once fat cells are removed via liposuction, they cannot grow back. However, if you were to gain a significant amount of weight after surgery, you are more likely to get fat deposits in other areas, although the treated areas can also be affected. Dr. Breitbart recommends you continue to exercise and eat a healthy diet to prolong your results long-term. Many patients find renewed motivation to work out and eat right after surgery because they are inspired by their results.

Can lipo help with excess skin and cellulite?

Liposuction is a fat removal or fat reduction procedure whose purpose is to sculpt areas of your body by eliminating excess fat. While SmartLipo Triplex™ can stimulate skin tightening and remodeling for firmer skin in patients with mild skin laxity, it will not eliminate significant loose or sagging skin.

Similarly, lipo cannot eliminate cellulite because cellulite is located in your skin. The connective tissues in your skin contain fibrous bands, and cellulite forms when fat pushes up against these bands, forming the bulging and dimpling appearance of cellulite. Liposuction removes fat from the deep tissues, and while SmartLipo Triplex™ may provide some improvement, it is generally not a definitive cellulite cure. Cellulaze treatment is designed to reduce cellulite.

Can lipo be combined with other procedures?

Yes, liposuction is often combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast surgery. Liposuction is included for patients interested in a Brazilian buttock lift because the fat is harvested from another area of the body with stubborn fat. Women who have had children will often combine breast surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck for a "mommy makeover."

Is it possible for lipo to be covered by insurance?

Liposuction is an elective cosmetic procedure, as are many plastic surgery procedures, and is not covered by health insurance. Our office can help you with financing options such as CareCredit and Alphaeon Credit.

What if I plan to become pregnant soon?

There’s no evidence that liposuction increases your risk of complications during pregnancy. The fat cells removed via lipo are gone for good, but the remaining fat cells in the area can expand with weight gain. However, you will likely gain weight in other areas or more proportionately during pregnancy.

Can I treat more than one area at a time?

Yes, liposuction can remove unwanted fat from multiple areas. Most patients elect to have more than one area treated during their procedure. The number of treated areas depends on the indications for treatment and how much fat can be removed.
